Stay Classy, San Diego

I grew up in San Diego and don't have a lot of compliments to pay the place. I'm pretty proud of it recently, though. Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders had been expected (and expecting) to veto a resolution in support of same sex marriage but could not go through with it at the last minute. Great quotes include:

"As I reflected on the choices I had before me last night, I just could not bring myself to tell an entire group of people in our community they were less important, less worthy or less deserving of the rights and responsibilities of marriage -- than anyone else -- simply because of their sexual orientation."

"The concept of a 'separate but equal' institution is not something I can support."

"I want for them the same thing that we all want for our loved ones -- for each of them to find a mate whom they love deeply and who loves them back; someone with whom they can grow old together and share life's experiences."

"And I want their relationships to be protected equally under the law. In the end, I couldn't look any of them in the face and tell them that their relationship -- their very lives -- were any less meaningful than the marriage I share with my wife Rana."

Beautiful.

Awesome! I hope (and wish) others follow his direction and perspective. To hear someone who's been against gay marriage/gay rights realize the huge injustice in that gives me a little bit of hope.

Aaah yes that is the San Diego I know.

I like how they're only changing it now that satellite images are widely available. Must be all the non-aryans with their non-aryans agendas!

I think it's pretty stupid to spend $6 million or hundred thousand or whatever to change how an office building / dorm looks from outer space. Who cares? There are very few to zero Nazis in the U.S. Navy. If they do this, the ignorant hippie stoners in the U of O vegan dorms will have won. The only way I would support this project is if they built a huge new addition to the complex in the shape of a circle with a line through it, so that from space it would look like a "No-Nazis" symbol. That would be funny. Or make a huge building that spells out "Nazis Suck" next to it. Also, I think we're all forgetting that in India the swastika is a symbol of good luck and prosperity that they paint all over their moped-rickshaws.
